The California National Party Pushes for a Universal Single-Payer Healthcare System
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (June 9, 2017) – The future of Obamacare or the new GOP-introduced healthcare bill, now in the Senate, is unclear. Yet there does seem to be relief at hand for Californians. The California National Party (CNP) is proud to endorse California Senate Bill 562, introduced on Feb. 17 by CA Senators Ricardo Lara and Toni Atkins. The bill proposes a comprehensive universal single-payer health care coverage and cost control system for the benefit of all residents of the state.
The Healthy California program is self-supporting via waivers and approvals allowing the state to merge funding to Medi-Cal, the CA Children’s Health Insurance Program, Medicare, the ACA, and any other federal programs so that any federal funds and other subsidies that would otherwise be paid to the state, to individuals, or to health care providers would instead be paid directly to the State and deposited in the Healthy California Trust Fund. In addition, the bill allows the state to negotiate mutual coverage with other states and nations that also have universal healthcare, allowing both Californians and visitors to have access to care while away from home.
“Affordable, quality health care is, in our view, a fundamental human right,” says Theo Slater, CNP Chairperson. SB 562 is an important step forward to providing for the needs of every Californian regarding healthcare. The California National Party looks forward to its passage.”
According to the Congressional Budget Office, “the number of Americans who would lose coverage or be unable to get it for the first time if AHCA is implemented would start at 14 million in 2018 and increase incrementally before leveling off to 24 million by 2024. In 2018 and 2019, the average premiums for single policy holders who do not get insurance from their employers would be 15% to 20% higher than under Obamacare, the CBO’s analysis said. The proposed GOP bill will be particularly harsh for older Americans, allowing insurers to charge up to five times more for older patients than younger ones.”
Slater concludes, “The legislative and executive branches of the US federal government are focused on laying hurdles in the pathway to affordable healthcare for all US citizens. California is leading the way in the opposite direction and we’re proud of it.”
